![]() PORNOGRAPHY January 2000; Volume 24 Issue 01 Omni Hotels drop in-room porn
The change will be phased in by the 40-hotel chain, since it must fulfill remaining contractual obligations. However, some of Omni's hotels are already porn-free, and by the summer of 2000 all will have removed their pay-per-view porn. The company has already removed all pornographic magazines from its hotel gift shops. AFA President Donald E. Wildmon praised the company for its boldness. "Omni has made a decision to honor the family and protect travelers from the temptation of in-room pornography," he said. "This was a decision based on moral principles rather than money. That's rare for companies in this day and age." The pay-per-view pornography business has been a lucrative one for hotels. In 1996, hotel guests spent over $175 million to watch "adult" movies in their rooms. Omni's decision will cost the chain $4 million a year. That's not the point, however, according to Omni VP of Marketing Peter Strebel. "Money is not the issue in this matter," he said. " Not all business decisions should be fiscally driven. We believe that this is the right thing to do; the right thing for Omni Hotels, our associates, our customers." Wildmon recommended that AFA supporters show their appreciation to Omni by patronizing the hotel chain whenever possible. "Let them know upon registration why you have chosen to stay at an Omni Hotel," he said.
