ACTIVISM

August 2000; Volume 24 Issue 07
20th century martyrs honored
A ceremony honoring Christians who have died for their faith during the 20th century was held in May in front of the Coliseum in Rome, the site of many Christian deaths under several Roman emperors.
Led by Pope John Paul II, the primarily Catholic service was also attended by the Rev. Joe Hale, chief executive of the World Methodist Council. One of those honored was Burleigh Aubrey Law, Jr., who was killed in the Belgian Congo attempting to rescue five missionary families during civil unrest there. Law was a lay Methodist missionary. Several other Methodist ministers were also remembered, especially those who perished for their faith under the communist regimes in North Korea and Bulgaria. The more well-known deaths of missionaries Jim Elliot, Ed McCully, Roger Younderian, Nate Saint and Pete Fleming, who were killed in Ecuador in 1956 while trying to initiate contact with the Auca Indians, were also mentioned.
