![]() HOMOSEXUAL AGENDA September 1999; Volume 23 Issue 09 McDonald's continues support of homosexuality
Earlier this year McDonald's avoided a showdown with pro-homosexual shareholders and amended its employment policies to include sexual orientation (See AFA Journal, 5/99.) To people calling McDonald's for an explanation, the corporation has been defending its policy change as a necessary weapon against discrimination. "McDonald's has always maintained a zero tolerance policy against any form of discrimination in our hiring and employment practices," a company spokesman wrote to an AFA supporter. AFA Director of Public Relations Allen Wildmon said such statements were nothing more than a misleading publicity spin. "I doubt that any homosexual has ever faced discrimination at McDonald's, even before this policy was instituted," he said. "Rather than protecting homosexuals on the job, this new corporate policy elevates the homosexual lifestyle to a place equal to that of race and gender. And that's why activists fight so hard in corporate boardrooms for policies like it." In response to concerned callers, McDonald's restaurants have been telling people that the policy change was on a corporate level, and would not necessarily affect local stores. But Wildmon said he was concerned that the corporation's view of homosexuality could easily trickle down and lead local franchise owners to follow suit. "It's true that local restaurant owners have tremendous flexibility with regard to such policies," he said. "So we are encouraging people first of all to call their local McDonald's and urge them not to collaborate with the corporate policy on this." Wildmon added, however, that local owners also have tremendous influence with the corporate office. He said, "McDonald's corporate policy is damaging the good community image of the local franchise owners across the nation." Wildmon recommended that people should call their local owner and express their disappointment with McDonald's headquarters and ask them to send those concerns up the ladder.
